Boogaloo a go-go! Who said Québec ain’t got no soul? Donald Seward will show you how groovy it was around here back in the sixties! Originally from Rouyn-Noranda, he played keyboards for the empirical yéyé band César et Les Romains. In 1968, he starts his solo career, at times a duet with Les Romains’s bassist, Peter Sidor. Since his teenage years, Seward has been inspired by african-american music: blues, r’n'b, soul, funk, and from these influences is born the legendary Studio “B” Funk, recorded at Tony Roman’s studio. Seward then collaborates with Quebec’s own Godfather of Soul, Pierre Perpall, to record his own version of a Sly & The Family Stone classic, Sing a Simple Song. The result proves to be hot, deep, sweaty, drenched in brasses and fatback drums. The version you can hear here is an instrumental found on 1969′s LP Donald Seward joue les plus grand succès. This album gathers an array of funky, loungy and even latin soul gems, like the suave interpretation of Mongo’s Boogaloo, originally from Mongo Santamaria, afro-cuban jazz percussionist.
